'EU on tariff threat: Priority is to engage, not escalate'

European Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson Olof Gill said on Monday that the EU's priority is to engage, not to escalate, referring to United States President Donald Trump's threat of tariffs.

Speaking at a press briefing, the spokesperson shared that "intensive consultations" among EU leaders are underway and that there is a possibility of the European Council taking place later this week over this issue. "Should the threatened tariffs be imposed, the EU has the tools at its disposal and is prepared to respond because we'll do everything necessary to protect our economic interests," he underlined.

Additionally, the spokesperson also revealed that the dialogue between Washington and Brussels is "ongoing on all levels," adding that the bloc is taking "every possible step" to avoid escalation over Greenland. "The Anti-Coercion Instrument's primary goal is to act as a deterrent," he said, "just mentioning the possibility of its use can have the desired effect."
