Iranian security chief Ali Larijani (pictured) said on Sunday that the ongoing protests, which started due to "legitimate demands of people" regarding the economy, were co-opted by a "destructive and organized wave," which turned them into riots.
Larijani claimed that the alleged group "exploited the protests and has engaged in very violent and criminal behavior, including killing individuals, burning people," comparing their "violent actions" to those of terrorist groups such as ISIS.
Larijani revealed that many police officers were injured, and several were killed, during the arrest. "We hope that the situation will progress in a way that will establish sustainable security for the people," he concluded.
