United States President Donald Trump is showing increasing interest in Canada's defense capabilities in the Arctic and criticizing the country's "vulnerability" to the US "adversaries" in that region," NBC News reported on Sunday, citing a senior administration official and three former senior US officials familiar with the matter.
According to the report, Trump's focus remains on Greenland, but he has also grown increasingly aware of what he sees as Canada's "similar inability" to defend its northern border against potential intrusions from Russia or China. The report noted that his administration sped up its internal talks on a wider Arctic strategy and a possible deal with Canada on strengthening its border defense.
"Trump is really worried about the US continuing to drift in the Western Hemisphere and is focused on this," one of the officials reportedly said, noting that the US president is currently not seeking to acquire Canada like he wants to do with Greenland.
