Starmer: I'll be PM this time next year

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed concerns about his leadership in an exclusive interview with the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, stating that he will remain prime minister at this time next year and cautioning that frequent leadership changes are not in the "national interest."

"I was elected in 2024 with a five-year mandate to change the country, and that's what I intend to do, to be faithful to that mandate," he said. "And I will be judged, and I know I'll be judged, when we get to the next election, on whether I've delivered on the key things that matter most to people."

Following a challenging 2025 highlighted by low poll numbers and sluggish economic growth, the Labour leader rejected worries over his position in his first interview of 2026. The prime minister went on to say that he does not see the upcoming elections in England, Wales, and Scotland in May as a "referendum" on his administration.
