United States President Donald Trump called for ending congestion pricing in Manhattan, calling it a "disaster" for New York City that has "never worked before" and will "never work now."
"I love New York, and hate to see it being destroyed so rapidly with such obviously foolish 'policy.'," Trump wrote on Truth Social. His statement came several days after the program, which charges most passenger cars $9 for entering Manhattan's so-called "Central Business District," hit its one-year anniversary.
The pricing was implemented with the goal of reducing traffic, minimizing pollution and raising funds for upgrades to the city's transit system. The peak period toll rate is in place from 5 am to 9 pm on weekdays and from 9 am to 9 pm on weekends, while overnight rates offer a 75% discount for all drivers.
