Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Tuesday that more than 400 political prisoners have been released in recent days, describing the move as part of a process launched by the executive. He said the first 160 detainees were freed on December 23, and insisted the releases would continue as a "unilateral gesture" by the Venezuelan government.
In parallel, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said three Spanish citizens with dual nationality were released this week. One plans to remain in Venezuela, another is returning to Spain, and a third is still deciding.
The releases come amid US pressure. US President Donald Trump earlier said Washington would halt a planned second attack on Venezuela after Caracas began freeing what he called a large number of political prisoners.
