5,000-lb bunker busters dropped on Iranian missile sites near Hormuz

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East witnessed a sharp escalation on Tuesday, March 17, as Israel claimed it had successfully eliminated top Iranian security official Ali Larijani, who was widely believed to be running Iran since the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel also said General Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran's Basij voluntary militia force, was among the other high-ranking officials killed in the fresh Israeli strikes. The deaths of both the officials were eventually confirmed by the Iranian state media by early Wednesday (IST). Meanwhile, an adviser to the UAE's president hinted that his country might join a possible US-led coalition to ensure safe passage of cargo ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
