The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) outlined the first missions under its Moon Base program on Tuesday and set target timelines for building a long-term presence near the Moon's South Pole ahead of future Artemis astronaut landings.
Moon Base I is targeted for launch no earlier than fall 2026 and will use Blue Origin's Mark 1 Endurance lander to deliver NASA equipment and test technologies for future crewed missions. Moon Base II and III, planned for later this year, will carry cargo, rovers, and scientific payloads to support lunar operations.
NASA also launched a dedicated Moon Base website that will serve as the central hub for mission updates and public communication. NASA awarded $188 million to Blue Origin for lunar delivery services, alongside $219 million to Astrolab and $220 million to Lunar Outpost for lunar vehicles, as part of preparations for future missions to Mars.
