Israel deployed "elite military and intelligence units" to Azerbaijan to aid its efforts during the military operation against Iran, CNN reported on Friday. According to two people familiar with the matter, the agents were stationed in the south of the country, near the border with Iran. In addition, "special commando units" were also allegedly sent to the area to collect intelligence and carry out drone missions.
The report claimed that Israel established covert sites in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Somaliland, among others, "some with permission, some likely without." A spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States rejected the allegations in the report, while Israel has not commented.
