Inmates take over eastern NC jail, release detention officers who were held hostage

Inmates overtook parts of the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in eastern North Carolina early Monday morning, officials said.

Multiple agencies responded to a "significant disturbance" at the jail around 5 a.m. During the incident, two of three on-duty guards were taken hostage. The third guard managed to escape. Officials say there were 88 inmates in the facility at the time.

Negotiations ultimately resulted in the safe release of 18 inmates and the two hostages by approximately 9:30 a.m. Shortly after, around 9:50 a.m., another large group of inmates was allowed to exit the facility. As the situation unfolded, authorities worked diligently to restore control over the detention center peacefully.

“Our top priority is the safety of our staff, inmates, and the surrounding community,” Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin stated. He noted that multiple law enforcement partners are being coordinated to resolve the situation as swiftly and safely as possible.

A secure perimeter has been established around the detention center, and authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the area during operations. Officials confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the response include the Bertie County Sheriff's Office, Martin County Sheriff's Office, NC SBI, NC ALE, FBI, and multiple local sheriff’s offices.
