X said Wednesday it had suspended more than 13,000 accounts involved in three suspected foreign influence operations linked to Iran, Russia and China that targeted US political conversation.
The networks used inauthentic accounts to post and amplify content about US politics, targeting candidates and public figures across the political spectrum, according to the company.
“Whether it is spam networks or entities engaged in influence operations, we are actively working to identify and stop coordinated inauthentic behavior that undermines the integrity of our platform,” X’s Global Government Affairs team said in a post on X.
The company said the accounts were uncovered through proactive sweeps and investigations as it outlined safeguards ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections.
Iran-linked influence operations have previously been detected on the platform. In 2021, Twitter, as X was then known, said it had suspended 238 accounts operating from Iran following an investigation that began with accounts attempting to disrupt public conversation during the first 2020 US presidential debate. Twitter said the accounts had low engagement and did not make an impact on the public conversation.
Twitter separately disclosed an Iran-based network in 2020 that it said artificially amplified discussions on politically sensitive US issues, including Black Lives Matter, the killing of George Floyd and other racial and social justice issues. The company said 104 accounts connected to that campaign were suspended.
People come to X to talk about what's happening in the world, including the upcoming 2026 US midterms. Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and we are proud that X is the global town square where these debates happen. Our job is to keep that conversation…
