Children of overprotective parents may be shorter-lived

Men who had an overprotective father and little autonomy during childhood may run a 12% higher risk of dying before their eightieth birthday. In the case of women who had an overprotective father, the risk of dying before the age of 80 can increase by 22%. On the other hand, for women who were well cared for by their mother during childhood, the risk may decrease by 14%.

Interestingly, the research also showed that men who lived with only one parent in childhood had a 179% higher risk of dying before turning 80.

These are some of the findings of a study involving analysis of data for 941 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA) who died between 2007 and 2018 (445 women and 496 men).

An article on the study is published in the journal Scientific Reports. The authors are researchers at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in Brazil and University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom.

The participants included in the study sample were born in the 1950s and 1960s. "The results of our analysis refer to people who would now be elderly, and they wouldn't necessarily be the same for later generations," said Tiago Silva Alexandre, last author of the article. Alexandre is a professor of gerontology at UFSCar.

The researchers analyzed the participants' answers to questionnaires about many aspects of their lives, including , housing, the head of household's occupation, the presence of infectious diseases, and relationships with parents in childhood and adolescence, especially care and protection. They looked for correlations among these items to estimate the impact of parental relationships on longevity.

"The most interesting thing about our study is that we were able to show in numbers what has been discussed about parenting for many years. Caring and loving relationships with your father and mother during childhood have repercussions for the rest of your life. In particular, our findings show how they affect longevity," Alexandre said. "Public policy should support better conditions during childhood in order for people to enjoy old age."

Research on the psychological after-effects of child-parent relationships has shown that authoritarianism, permissiveness and negligence can be negative for children's development.

"The middle way is best, avoiding both intrusiveness, which stops children from being autonomous, as well negligence or emotional distance. What we call care in the article is a matter of not neglecting but being present and taking care without overprotecting," said Aline Fernanda de Souza Canelada, first author of the article. She participated in the study for her master's research.

The study is the first to investigate how the absence of a parent or deficient parental relationships can reduce longevity. "Children need  and support, but not intrusion, which deprives the child of autonomy. Research in psychology shows that this kind of relationship is also weak, because the child is afraid of the parent, and leads to various problems, including unhealthy habits, with some studies showing an increased risk of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as mental health difficulties such as stress, which correlates closely with reduced longevity," Canelada said.

Similarly, the lower risk for women who were well cared for by their mother may be associated with a low level of stress during childhood (and hence adulthood). According to the results of the study, only maternal care mattered; paternal relationships were not considered crucial.

"We know from studies in the area of psychology that all these phenomena relating to parental relationships affect behavior. There's a theory that links this to stress. Neglected children may experience higher levels of stress later in life owing to the reverberations of this early neglect, and the probability of disease increases," Alexandre said.

The researchers analyzed premature mortality independently from ill health and age. "It would be incorrect to attribute the higher risk of early death to a past event without considering the presence of diseases and problems in old age. We therefore controlled for these variables, and analyzed the correlations involving factors present in a subject's childhood with premature mortality regardless of their health in old age," he said.

Post-war generation

Although the study focused on what happened to the "baby boom" generation born after the Second World War, the researchers believe it is not possible to be certain that the experience of more recent generations is very different.

"We know parents now overprotect their children differently, and this may also have an impact. It's a different kind of , but it also has its fragilities," Alexandre said, citing the example of children who live with only one parent. The study pointed to a 179% higher risk of dying before age 80 for the  who lived with only one parent when they were children.

"In this case, cultural and social factors may have had a more significant effect than they do now. Having separated parents was seen differently in the past and could be particularly difficult for male children. We can't know how this would work out now, given the society we have, but it was very heavy for males born in the 1950s and 1960s, the study shows," he said.

The study also pointed to a difference between genders in terms of the impact on longevity of parental absence or negative parental relationships. Overprotective parents affected the lifespans of female children more than male children, and the presence of a mother had a positive effect only on those of female . According to Canelada, women are apparently more likely to internalize negative emotions and more frequently suffer from mental disorders, while men are more subject to alcohol and drug abuse. "In any event, both factors correlate closely with longevity," she said.

Labels For Pfizer, Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines Updated To Acknowledge Limitations Wanted

by Zachary Stieber via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

A coalition of experts is calling for U.S. officials to update the labels for the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to acknowledge limitations to clinical trials, including stating clearly that the phase III trials that led to clearance did not provide evidence of efficacy against death.

“Incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading labeling of any medical product can negatively impact the health and safety of Americans, with global ramifications considering the international importance of FDA decisions,” Peter Doshi, an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy whose expertise includes clinical trials, and eight other experts wrote in the petition.

The group, known as the Coalition Advocating for Adequately Labeled Medicines, sent the petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which authorized the vaccines in late 2020 and approved them in 2021.

The experts note that the clinical trials that led to the authorization “were not designed to determine and failed to provide substantial evidence of vaccine efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 transmission or death. As evidence, they cited the FDA’s review memorandums, which said in part that “data are limited to assess the effect of the vaccine against transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from individuals who are infected despite vaccination.”

SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19.

Even today, the FDA says on its website that “the scientific community does not yet know” if the vaccines will reduce such transmission.

“While language in labeling that states what a product has not been proven to do is uncommon, it is necessary when caregivers and patients may inaccurately assume something that is untrue,” the coalition stated, citing how Dr. Anthony Fauci, a former top U.S. health official, President Joe Biden, and others have falsely suggested the vaccines prevent transmission and would lead to herd immunity.

People should also be informed that the efficacy of Pfizer’s vaccine wanes after just two months, the experts said. They pointed to Pfizer’s interim results from the trial, which were available in April 2021 but not disclosed to the public until July 2021.

They also want the adverse event sections expanded to include sudden cardiac deathpulmonary embolism, and decreased sperm concentration, among other event types.

Studies from the FDA and others have found an association between one or both of the vaccines and the conditions.

FDA’s mission is to advance public health in part by helping the public get accurate, science-based information. However, we are concerned that current FDA-approved labeling for the mRNA COVID vaccines is seriously out of date, and, thus, has potential to misinform providers and patients,” Kim Witczak, founder of Woody Matters and one of the signatories, told The Epoch Times via email.

The FDA, Pfizer, and Moderna did not respond to requests for comment.

Public Comments

Members of the public can add comments to the petition here.

Early comments support the petition.

“The very least you could do is properly label these medical products and give people informed consent, so they know the same risks that you know, which have been proven clinically and through many individual tragedies,” one comment said.

Another said the FDA should require the vaccine makers to update the labels “to ensure safety and efficacy.”

Previous Denial

The coalition submitted a petition in mid-2021 asking the FDA not to grant approval, a step above emergency authorization, to any of the COVID-19 vaccines until at least two years of follow-up had been completed.

They also urged regulators to ensure “substantial evidence of clinical effectiveness that outweighs harms in special populations,” such as infants, pregnant women, and people who have recovered from COVID-19, and an in-depth safety assessment of the spike proteins the vaccines introduce into the body.

Ukraine's defence ministry in turmoil as Russia readies offensive

Ukraine sowed confusion on Monday about whether its defence minister would be replaced, creating doubts about the leadership of its war effort just as it braces for an expected Russian offensive.

The questions over Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov were the first public sign of serious disarray in Ukraine's wartime leadership.

A day after announcing that Reznikov would be sidelined, a top ally of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appeared to row back, saying no changes would be made this week.

David Arakhamia, chief of the parliamentary bloc of Zelenskiy's party, had said the 37-year-old head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, would replace Reznikov, who would become minister of strategic industries.

But Zelenskiy remained silent, while Reznikov said on Sunday he had heard nothing.

The confusion caps a two-week crackdown on alleged official wrongdoing, Ukraine's biggest political and administrative shakeup since Russia invaded a year ago.

Central and regional officials were fired or quit, security forces raided a billionaire's home and investigations were launched into suspected fraud at the main oil company and refinery. The Defence Ministry was accused of overpaying for food, although Reznikov was not personally accused of any wrongdoing.

Zelenskiy says he needs to show that Kyiv can be a safe steward of billions of dollars of Western aid. But the moves may risk destabilising a political class that had stood together against Russia's invasion.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have been advancing for the first time in six months in relentless battles in the east. A regional governor said Moscow was pouring in reinforcements for a new offensive that could begin next week.

'EVERYTHING WILL BE RESOLVED'

Ukraine is itself planning a spring offensive, but awaiting delivery of promised longer-range Western missiles and battle tanks.

Some of the West's support has also come in the form of economic sanctions, and there was a sign that these were hitting Russia's foreign revenues just as it raises spending on the war.
