NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Friday that the alliance "stands ready to defend every inch of Allied territory" after a Russian drone hit an apartment block in Romania's city of Galati.
In a post on X, Rutte said he spoke with Romanian President Nicusor Dan and assured him of NATO's "absolute solidarity" following the incident, which injured 2 civilians. "We will continue to enhance our readiness to deter and defend against any threat, including from drones," Rutte said. He added that Russia's "reckless behaviour is a danger to us all" and said the implications of Moscow's war against Ukraine "don't stop at the border."
The comments came after Romanian Foreign Minister Toi Oana described the drone strike as a "grave and irresponsible escalation" by Russia, and NATO announced plans to strengthen its defenses. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the European Union is preparing a 21st sanctions package against Moscow.
