Cuomo’s mental acuity ‘in decline,’ NYC can’t afford another ‘Joe Biden moment’: mayoral rival Ramos

New York City can’t afford to elect former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as Big Apple mayor because his “mental acuity is in decline” — and residents can’t afford a “Joe Biden moment” at City Hall, a rival for the Democratic nomination said.

State Sen. Jessica Ramos made the stunning claim about the 67-year-old Cuomo during a Post editorial board meeting Thursday.

“I don’t think the City of New York can afford a Joe Biden moment. I think that there are real reasons why he’s not answering questions,” Ramos, referring to the former president’s mental decline in office.

The Queens lawmaker referenced Cuomo’s testimony before the House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, where he was raked over the coals for a controversial administrative edict that ordered nursing homes to accept recovering COVID patients discharged from hospitals and lowballing the deaths of nursing residents.

“Even when he went before Congress, he just can’t remember details about what he did,” Ramos, 39, said.

Republican lawmakers and other critics accused him of lying, which Cuomo denied.  

“His mental acuity is in decline,” Ramos repeated when The Post edit board pressed her to clarify her bombshell accusation.

Cuomo would be the oldest mayor elected to City Hall since Abe Beame took office in 1974.  

She surmised that Cuomo having to “resign in disgrace” as governor in 2021 — under the threat of impeachment amid sexual misconduct accusations from a slew of women —  took a toll on his mental health and memory. Cuomo has denied the harassment accusations.

“I imagine having to resign in disgrace must have really taken a toll on, at the very least, at the very least, his ego, but most certainly his mental health,” Ramos said.

Cuomo campaign spokesman Richard Azzopardi, asked about Ramos’s claim that the former governor is in mental decline, said, “You can quote me rolling my eyes – this is a desperate attack from a desperate extreme left socialist who is in debt and polling at 3 percent.”

“Was she sober when she said it?,” the Cuomo rep added.

Asked if Cuomo would take a mental competency test to prove his acuity, Azzopardi shot back, “F–k, off.”

Despite his baggage, the former thrice-elected governor is the clear front-runner in the Democratic primary for mayor, according to a series of recent polls.

Left-wing socialist Zohran Mamdani has surged to second place, well behind Cuomo, but ahead of Ramos and all other candidates who’ve failed to break single-digit support from Democrats in surveys.

Ramos also is struggling to raise funds, with a cash balance of $1,039 in her campaign kitty, according to the Campaign Finance Board.

The primary election is June 24, preceded by a week of early voting.

Ramos insisted there’s time for her to breakthrough, noting that polls indicate that about 20% of Democrats have yet to make up their mind in the mayor’s office.

The Iron Workers union earlier this week endorsed her as the number two choice after Cuomo, indicating some support in the labor movement.

She chairs the Senate Labor Committee.

“The second large, portion of the electorate right now is undecided. There are more undecided voters than those supporting the DSA candidate. So I want to say that there’s still a very wide lane that someone can take, and I’m betting on myself,” Ramos said.

On the issues, Ramos said she is against Mayor Eric Adams’s decision to allow US Immigration Customs and Enforcement access to the Rikers Island jail complex to accelerate deportations.

“Due process is a human right,” she said, backing the city’s sanctuary law.

Ramos defended her “defund the police” statement from five years ago, and said she would rein in bloated spending on costly overtime and high-tech gizmos like K5 police robots. 

She said the police crackdown on sex trafficking and other crime and disorder along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor in her district has largely been a bust.

Her priority would be going after the gangs and human traffickers.

A daughter of Colombian immigrants, she supports dramatically increasing the number of legal permits for street vendors.

On education, she opposes legislation to lift the cap on charter school openings in New York City, saying she would focus on improving the traditional public schools and work on a labor contract with the teachers’ union to promote recruitment and retention as well as accountability.

She said making it easier for working class residents to own a home would be a priority in her housing program.

Ms. Rachel defends posts about Gaza kids after antisemitism group reported her to AG Bondi

 YouTube star Ms. Rachel broke her silence Thursday to defend her posts about the kids suffering in Gaza after an antisemitism group accused her of spreading Hamas propaganda and reported it to the Justice Department.

Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, shared a poem on Instagram referencing the allegations levied against her by StopAntisemitism, which penned a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this month to investigate the YouTuber.

“Children have human rights. These rights are not just for some children, they are for all children. Standing up for children, especially those who are most vulnerable, is the right thing to do,” Accurso, 42, wrote.

“All children have the right to food, water, medical care and education. All children should be protected from violence,” she added in a caption.

The post was the first time Accurso spoke publicly about the allegations, with StopAntisemitism claiming her messages over the suffering in Gaza are anti-Israel and are meant to inspire pro-Hamas sympathies among young kids.

The group ultimately claimed Accurso served as a mouthpiece for Hamas’ interests, citing several posts on her social media accounts condemning the war in Gaza’s effects on Palestinian children.

StopAntisemitism, however, provided no public evidence to support claims that Accurso was working for Hamas to spread propaganda, with all of their allegations against the YouTuber refuted by various reports from media outlets and the United Nations.

Among the objectionable content, according to the group, are viral images of a child with protruding limbs depicting starvation in the enclave. StopAntisemitism claimed those images were debunked, with the child not suffering starvation, but instead suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Fadi al-Zant, the child in question, however, was suffering from both cystic fibrosis and starvation, his mother told the Washington Post. He became a widely shared symbol for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza before he was evacuated and treated.

StopAntisemitism also objected to Ms. Rachel sharing the death toll provided by the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, which does not differentiate between terrorists and civilians.

The group alleges that the estimates that nearly 15,000 children have died in the war were debunked, accusing the children’s star of spreading misinformation.

While Israel disputes the figure, the UN has reported similar death tolls as well.

StopAntisemitism ounder Liora Rez said Thursday in response to Accurso’s statement, “StopAntisemitism raised a valid question: why has a children’s content creator, who had never previously engaged with the Israel-Palestinian conflict, suddenly posted over 50 times in support of one side – often repeating their propaganda?

“The conflict did not begin in 2023, and yet Ms. Rachel’s obsessive commentary only began recently. We simply asked: why now?

Ms. Rachel claims to be “for all kids,” but her silence on the suffering of Jewish children tells a different story.

We questioned the strange and disproportionate pattern in her posts and asked whether outside influence, possibly foreign funding, could be driving this drastic shift in tone and content. Given that she has rarely commented on politics before and even faced backlash when she did, the change is suspicious.”

Accurso, a teacher who resides in New York City and whose husband is Broadway music director and composer Aron Accurso, has repeatedly defended herself since coming under criticism last year for launching a fundraiser for children living in war zones, including Gaza.

Despite the claims that her advocacy is one-sided, Accurso has repeatedly addressed the suffering for children in both Israel and Gaza, with the YouTuber mourning the deaths of Israeli hostages Ariel and Kfir Bibas in February, the youngest captives who were taken during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack.

The DOJ confirmed that it did receive the letter from StopAntisemitism about Accurso, but declined to comment further.

Alleged MS-13 member ‘sipping margaritas’ with Van Hollen amid El Salvador deportation battle

 Alleged MS-13 gangbanger Kilmar Abrego Garcia was seen “sipping margaritas” with Sen. Chris Van Hollen Thursday amid his high-profile deportation battle, according to photos shared by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele.

Bukele shared three pics of the Democratic Maryland lawmaker meeting with Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador’s notorious megaprison last month, while lounging in the country’s “tropical paradise.”

“Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously risen from the ‘death camps’ & ‘torture’, now sipping margaritas with Sen. Van Hollen in the tropical paradise of El Salvador,” Bukele said in an X post Thursday night.

Van Hollen (D-MD) traveled to the Central American nation this week to push for the release of the illegal migrant and purported MS-13 member.

Van Hollen also took to social media to share a photo of him meeting with Abrego Garcia, who was wearing a colorful checkered collard shirt, jeans, sneakers and a Kansas City Super Bowl hat .

“I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar,” Van Hollen posted to X.

“Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.”

Abrego Garcia — who had been living in Maryland — was shipped off with 260 other reputed gang members to El Salvador’s hellhole lockup CECOT last month under the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act.

The feds have claimed he is part of the notorious MS-13 gang with a rank and street name and that he was illegally in the country — despite never being charged with a crime and repeatedly denying the gang accusations.

Several court orders — including one from the US Supreme Court — have called on the federal government to return the Salvadoran migrant.
