Anthropic restores Claude service after outage affecting thousands

Tech company Anthropic restored service to its artificial intelligence chatbot Claude after a nearly three-hour outage Monday that affected thousands, the company said in a statement.

“Claude is back up and running across claude.ai and our apps. We’re grateful to our users as the team works to match the incredible demand we’ve seen for Claude in recent days,” Anthropic said in a statement to The Hill late Monday morning.

According to a website monitoring the status of Claude from Anthropic, multiple Claude products faced partial outages for up to two hours and 45 minutes. Shortly after 6:30 a.m. EST, 2,133 people had reported problems with Claude to the website Downdetector, which tracks reported issues with different technology services.

Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon was labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk. Hegseth’s comments followed President Trump ordering federal agencies to stop using technology from Anthropic.

“Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic,” Hegseth said in a post on social platform X.

Earlier in the week, the Pentagon warned of using the Defense Production Act (DPA) against the tech company during tension over Anthropic’s limits on its AI tools. On Tuesday, the Pentagon advised Anthropic that it could invoke the DPA to use the company’s tools as it wanted.

'US Used Anthropic's Claude AI In Iran Strikes Hours After Trump's Ban: Report'

The US government reportedly used Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools from the San Francisco-based startup Anthropic during the strikes on Iran - hours after President Donald Trump directed his federal agencies to stop the company's AI system use.

The US Central Command in the Middle East used Anthropic's tools for intelligence assessments, target identification, and simulating battle scenarios, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Claude AI was also reportedly used in the US military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump's big move against Anthropic came on Friday as the company's CEO, Dario Amodei, rejected the Pentagon's demands to allow the military unrestricted use of its AI technology. He ordered most agencies to immediately stop Anthropic's AI use, but gave the  Pentagon a six-month period to phase out the technology that is already embedded in military platforms.

"We don't need it, we don't want it, and will not do business with them again!" Trump said in a post on social media, calling Anthropic's decision a "disastrous mistake". He also called those working at Anthropic "left-wing nut jobs" and said their "selfishness is putting American lives at risk and the national security in jeopardy".

Rejected Demands, AI-Use Halt, Warnings: All About Anthropic Vs Team Trump

According to the Republican leader, Anthropic made a mistake trying to strong-arm the Pentagon.

Anthropic is planning to challenge the Trump administration's decision to label it a "supply chain risk" in court - making it one of the few companies to directly do so in the US President's second term.

The AI company, in a statement, said that "no amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War" will change their position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. "We will challenge any supply chain risk designation in court," it said.

Anthropic explained that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's supply chain risk designation will only apply to the use of Claude in Department of War contracts, and other operations will remain unaffected. "We believe this designation would both be legally unsound and set a dangerous precedent for any American company that negotiates with the government," it said.

Rutte: No plans for NATO's involvement in Iran

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte insisted on Monday that there are "absolutely" no plans for the alliance to become directly involved in the United States and Israel's military campaign against Iran.

Still, while speaking to ARD, Rutte expressed support for the operation. He described the feat as "really important" and stressed that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Earlier in the day, Rutte had a telephone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who, according to his office's statement, "underlined the importance of giving diplomacy a chance for lasting and sustainable peace." During the conversation, Rutte "said that NATO will continue to contribute to ensuring the security of the allies with a 360-degree perspective."
