Japanese tech company Fujitsu Limited is joining a project led by investment holding company SoftBank Group Corp. to develop high-performance memory for artificial intelligence and supercomputers, Nikkei reported.
According to the report, SoftBank has launched a company named Saimemory to serve as the hub for a public-private initiative involving Fujitsu and other partners. The project reportedly aims to develop an alternative to high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which uses stacked DRAM chips to handle large data volumes. The report stated that investments are expected to reach 8 billion yen ($51.2 million) by fiscal 2027 to complete a prototype, with mass production targeted by fiscal 2029.
The Japanese investment holding company is allegedly planning to allocate 3 billion yen to Saimemory by fiscal 2027, while Fujitsu and Japan's Riken national research institute are said to be planning investments of around one billion yen.
