Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that the Trump administration "absolutely" did not pressure the European Union to decide against using frozen Russian assets to back a loan for Ukraine. "We just want to avoid the risk of a ruling from the Court of Justice in the event of a dispute: it would be a slap in the face from Russia to defenders of the rule of law," he told La Stampa.
Tajani also said that aid to Ukraine will mostly be humanitarian, aiming to help the population through the winter. "This is the primary concern, because the Russians want to weaken the resistance of the Ukrainian people, more than that of the Ukrainian armed forces," he stated, adding that weapons will also be included.
