British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned on Monday that China poses "real national security threats to the United Kingdom," but also acknowledged the Asian nation as being "of immense scale, ambition and ingenuity."
In his annual speech on foreign policy at the Guildhall in London, Starmer described China as a "defining force in technology, trade and global governance" and argued that the UK needs a "China policy that recognizes this reality" after years of blowing "hot and cold." Rejecting the idea of a "binary choice" between an "ice age" and a "golden age" when it comes to dealing with Beijing, Starmer stressed the UK's response "will not be driven by fear."
"This is not a question of balancing economic and security considerations. We don't trade off security in one area, for a bit more economic access somewhere else," he said. "But by taking tough steps to keep us secure, we enable ourselves to cooperate in other areas," Starmer noted.
