'CNN: Iraqi fighters said to be helping Iran suppress protests'

Thousands of fighters from Iraqi militias joined Iranian authorities to help them suppress the ongoing protests in the country, CNN reported on Thursday, citing a European military source and an Iraqi security source.

According to the report, nearly 5,000 Iraqi militiamen entered Iran through two border crossings in the south of the country: the Shaib border crossing in Maysan province and the Zurbatiya border crossing in Wasit province. The report also claimed that 800 Shiite fighters entered the country from the Iraqi provinces of Diyala, Maysan, and Basra, claiming to be on religious pilgrimages.

Iraqi fighters have reportedly been entering Iran since the protests started over two weeks ago, and they were said to belong to various armed groups loyal to Iran, including Kataib Hezbollah, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, and the Badr Organization. The groups are allegedly operating under the umbrella of the larger group called the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
