Dell Technologies Inc.'s shares rose 6% on Friday as rival supplier of server equipment Super Micro Computer slumped 27% after a company co-founder was charged for a $2.5 billion scheme to smuggle restricted Nvidia-based AI chips and servers into China using fake documents.
Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw, a co-founder of Super Micro, was accused by the US of violating US export regulations by unlawfully sending billions of dollars' worth of Nvidia-powered servers to China. Liaw and two other company employees, according to the prosecution, sold the AI technology through a Southeast Asian company with the knowledge that it would be shipped to China.
Dell's shares rose by 6.17% to go for $166.44 apiece at 12:43 pm ET.
