SoftBank to build 9.2-GW gas generation project in Ohio

SoftBank and the United States Department of Energy announced on Friday that the Japanese company will build a 9.2-gigawatt (GW) natural gas generation project in Ohio with the goal of powering a new 10-GW data center at the Portsmouth Site in Pike County, Ohio, used in artificial intelligence.

The project will be undertaken by SoftBank's company SB Energy, will include $33.3 billion in Japanese funding, and is set to be installed by the end of the decade. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son (pictured) stated that the project will be worth $500 billion.

SoftBank noted that it formed the so-called Portsmouth Consortium of companies and financial institutions planning to participate in the project, which is part of Japan's $550 billion US investment pledge. The investment holding company stressed that 21 entities have already expressed their wish to participate, including Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, and Hitachi Ltd. from Japan, as well as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, and GE Vernova from the US.
