Putin: West deceived Russia using Ukraine

 Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted on Saturday that the West deceived Moscow and used Ukraine as a tool to achieve its geopolitical goals.

Speaking at a press conference following the Victory Day celebrations, Putin claimed that the West's effort began in the 1990s, when the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) began expanding to the east. He said that the West hoped that its support for Ukraine would lead to the collapse of Russian statehood, which it failed to succeed in.

Still, Putin expressed his hope for the restoration of Russia's relations with the European Union, but noted that it must be based on mutual respect. He also claimed that the EU is already seeking contact with Moscow.
