Three junior members of the British government resigned on Monday, calling for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to step down after the Labour Party's disappointing results in the latest local elections.
Tom, Rutland, Joe Morris, and Naushabah Khan – Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPSs) to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, and a ministerial aide to the Cabinet Office, respectively – thus became the first members of the government to do so. Meanwhile, more than 60 out of 403 Labour Members of Parliament (MPs) urged Starmer to resign.
In the latest local elections, held in 136 English local authorities, the Labour Party lost 38 councils and more than 1,496 councillors nationwide. It also lost power in the Senedd, the Welsh parliament, after 27 years. Still, Starmer rejected the idea of resigning and announced his intention to stand as the party's leader in the next general election.
