EU sanctions Iranian individuals over Hormuz

The European Union announced new sanctions on Monday amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, initiated with an Israeli strike on Beirut. The Council said it permitted "restrictive measures against two individuals and one entity" for threatening freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in violation of international law.

Targeted are the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy, which allegedly forces vessels to pay tolls and submit to screening, plus Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the IRGC Navy Mohammad Akbarzadeh, who, the bloc said, threatens drones or missile attacks, and Hamid Hosseini, who "promotes the policy of submitting, undergoing assessment, and paying transit fees to Iranian authorities for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz."

With these listings, 26 people and 27 entities now face EU asset freezes and travel bans. No European actions have been announced against Israel, even as the US tries in vain to mediate.
