United States President Donald Trump talked to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about her recent remarks regarding Taiwan, Nikkei reported, citing sources.
The sources noted that the two sides said they would "cooperate to calm" China down. Beijing expressed strong dissatisfaction with Takaichi's recent comments, in which she stated Tokyo might need to mobilize its defense forces if Taiwan is invaded. While Trump and Takaichi held a phone conversation earlier on Tuesday, neither administration confirmed that the two discussed the issue.
While The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Trump advised the Japanese prime minister to soften her stance regarding the Taiwan issue, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara slammed the report, insisting it was not correct.
