US natural gas prices experienced a significant jump on Tuesday due to a shift in the weather forecast for late January. The colder-than-normal forecast is anticipated to lead to increased power generation requirements and heavy heating demand. The price increases are supported by both growing domestic demand forecasts and grid operator alerts.
US President Donald Trump's threat of new tariffs on a large portion of Europe, all of which are US allies, for standing with Denmark and Greenland in opposition to US policies also buoyed the market sentiment.
At 8:17 am ET, US natural gas futures rallied 15.28% for February deliveries to sell at $3.5740 per MMBtu.
