A Russian tanker carrying over 240,000 barrels of diesel has abandoned its voyage to Cuba and is now sailing southeast after weeks of uncertainty surrounding a shipment meant to help relieve the fuel-starved island’s worsening energy crisis.
Ship-tracking data from energy intelligence firm Kpler listed the destination for the Russian-flagged tanker Universal as Cuba as recently as Tuesday. That destination has since changed to “for order,” a shipping term indicating a vessel is awaiting instructions. The ship has spent weeks idling in the Sargasso Sea after halting its voyage toward Cuba, raising questions about whether the long-delayed fuel cargo would ever reach the country.
