HCA to acquire 8,000-student healthcare college

HCA Healthcare has agreed to acquire The College of Health Care Professions, a Houston-based allied healthcare training provider that enrolls more than 8,000 students annually across 10 Texas campuses and online.

The Nashville-based health system announced the deal May 27 and terms were not disclosed. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. CHCP Chancellor and CEO Eric Bing will continue to lead CHCP following the close.

“The College of Health Care Professions has built a strong legacy of preparing skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals,” said Sam Hazen, HCA Healthcare’s CEO. “Together, we are investing in the future of healthcare and strengthening the talent pipeline that will serve patients and communities.”

HCA and CHCP have an existing partnership spanning decades, including program advisory boards, clinical placement and a 12-week medical assistant training program launched in 2023 to build a talent pipeline for HCA’s urgent care centers across Texas and more than 100 graduates have joined HCA to date.

Founded in 1988, CHCP has prepared more than 52,000 students for healthcare careers and currently offers over 20 accredited programs, including sonography, surgical tech, radiologic technology and medical coding and billing.

The deal extends HCA’s growing bet on owning the education pipeline. The system acquired a majority stake in Galen College of Nursing in 2020 and has since invested more than $300 million to expand it to 25 campuses nationwide. HCA also operates Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Mo., and HCA Florida Mercy College of Nursing in Miami.

On the transactions front, HCA has been active but selective. Mr. Hazen signaled earlier in 2025 that the system’s growth strategy would lean toward organic expansion, adding beds, outpatient facilities and rural complementary sites, while closing targeted acquisitions such as Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H., and Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Florida. The CHCP deal reflects a separate, parallel track of influencing the talent supply before graduates hit the open market.
