Why Did China Reserve A Vast Offshore Airspace For 40 Days Without Explanation?

China has imposed a 40-day offshore airspace restriction larger than Taiwan without explanation, signaling a potential shift toward sustained military readiness near Japan and U.S. allies.

China filed Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) reserving offshore airspace in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea from March 27 to May 6, a 40-day window, without announcing any military exercises or offering a public explanation. The reserved zones cover an area larger than Taiwan’s main island, spanning from the Yellow Sea facing South Korea to the East China Sea facing Japan, including airspace north and south of Shanghai.

The restrictions carry no vertical ceiling, designated SFC-UNL, meaning surface to unlimited altitude. Civil aviation remains unaffected. Commercial flights are still permitted to pass through these areas, but must coordinate carefully with Chinese air traffic control authorities.

NOTAMs of this type have previously been used to signal Chinese military exercises, which typically last a few days. China has issued comparable restrictions along the same coastline at least four times in the past 18 months, but those lasted only three days and were openly linked to announced exercises, missile launches, or live-fire training events.

This time, Beijing provided no warning, no declared exercise, and no explanation. China’s Ministry of Defense and civil aviation authorities issued no statements and did not respond to requests for comment.

The November and December 2024 precedent is directly relevant. In November 2024, Shanghai air traffic control issued a NOTAM restricting seven large sections of airspace off China’s coast for periods spanning three days. Those zones overlapped with airspace subsequently used during large-scale military exercises in December 2024.

China provided no reason for the November restrictions, and they passed relatively unnoticed by the international media. Analysts assessed that they may have served as a rehearsal for the more significant airspace reservations that accompanied the December exercises.

Ray Powell, director of Stanford University’s SeaLight project, which tracks Chinese maritime activity, told The Wall Street Journal that the combination of SFC-UNL designation and a 40-day duration with no announced exercise suggests “a sustained operational readiness posture—and one that China apparently doesn’t feel the need to explain.”

Christopher Sharman, director of the U.S. Naval War College’s China Maritime Studies Institute, said the zones could provide China an opportunity to practice air combat maneuvers relevant to a Taiwan contingency.

Ben Lewis of PLATracker, an organization that analyzes the Chinese military and regional security development, assessed that the longer window likely gives China’s military scheduling flexibility for spring training and said he does not anticipate major exercises given the Kuomintang chair’s visit to Beijing and the planned Trump–Xi summit in mid-May.

The restricted zones lie hundreds of miles north of Taiwan but sit directly along approaches facing Japan and South Korea. A senior Taiwanese security official told the Journal the reservation is “clearly aimed at Japan,” reflecting Chinese efforts to deter U.S. allies and erode American military influence in the Indo-Pacific while U.S. attention remains on the Middle East conflict.

Past Chinese drills have focused on controlling air routes the U.S. military would use in a Taiwan contingency, and the pause in daily PLA flights near Taiwan that preceded these NOTAMs also remains unexplained.

The restrictions carry implications for the United States, Japan, and Taiwan. The United States recently moved long-range missile assets from the Pacific to the Middle East, and the restricted zones cover approaches directly relevant to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command force projection. Japan faces the most direct exposure, as the East China Sea portion of the restricted airspace faces Japan’s southwestern island chain, where Japan has deployed long-range missiles capable of reaching parts of mainland China.

By using a routine aviation mechanism without stating a military purpose, China imposes costs, heightened readiness, intelligence resources, and diplomatic caution on all three parties simultaneously, without triggering the international backlash that an announced large-scale exercise would generate.

No public U.S. government response to the restrictions has been reported. The U.S. military nonetheless continues operations in the region. USS John Finn conducted a Taiwan Strait transit on March 10, with the U.S. 7th Fleet stating the mission “demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific” and that American forces “will continue to fly, sail, and operate anywhere international law allows.”

On March 28, one day after China’s airspace restrictions took effect, Japanese fighter jets scrambled to intercept a new variant of China’s Y-9FQ anti-submarine warfare aircraft over the East China Sea, approximately 160 miles northeast of Okinawa. Japan’s Ministry of Defense, in releasing details of the intercept, stated that it “will continue to collect information and conduct surveillance on military movements around Japan 24 hours a day and will take all necessary measures against airspace violations.”

Japan has also increased defense spending to 2 percent of GDP ahead of schedule and is working with the United States to expand the joint military presence in Japan’s southwestern region.

Omar Accused Of Trying To Steer $1.4M To Nonprofit With Somali Restaurant For Address

 U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is facing fresh accusations after Republicans flagged her reported push to direct more than $1 million in federal taxpayer funds to a small Somali-led nonprofit whose listed project address matches a Minneapolis restaurant.

The nonprofit, Generation Hope MN, describes itself as providing addiction recovery services, peer support, job training, and mental health support for the East African community. The address tied to Omar’s earmark request - 326 Cedar Ave S / 411 Cedar Ave S - matches Sagal Restaurant and Coffee, a Somali eatery. Conservative investigator Angela Rose documented the site in a video, using Google Street View archives and on-site footage to show minimal or no clinic signage over years, with the building primarily operating as a restaurant. The owner has confirmed Generation Hope uses upstairs space in the multi-tenant property, but critics highlighted the optics amid Minnesota’s fraud history.

Omar, joined by Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, had requested approximately $1.031 million (with some reports citing up to $1.46 million in initial figures) through the Department of Justice’s Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program for the group’s “Justice Empowerment Initiative.” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and other Republicans flagged multiple concerns: the restaurant address, three directors listing the same residential home address in filings, and the organization’s limited demonstrated capacity for large-scale treatment services. House Republicans stripped the earmark from a FY2026 spending package in January 2026. GOP senators later requested a formal DOJ fraud investigation into Generation Hope MN.

This development coincides with a separate but related state-level investigation. On April 22, 2026, Minnesota State Rep. Kristin Robbins (R), chair of the House Fraud Prevention & State Oversight Committee, publicly released a formal data request letter to Omar after the congresswoman reportedly declined multiple invitations to testify about her MEALS Act (H.R. 6187, 116th Congress). That 2020 legislation, incorporated into the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, expanded child nutrition programs and loosened some eligibility requirements during the pandemic—changes critics say contributed to conditions enabling the massive Feeding Our Future scandal, which allegedly defrauded taxpayers of more than $250 million. Court records and trials have implicated numerous individuals in Omar’s district, many from the Somali-American community, with some having ties to her orbit (including a former staffer who pled guilty and associates at sites like Safari Restaurant, where Omar appeared in a 2020 promotional video). Omar has distanced herself from the defend ants and called the fraud “reprehensible,” while urging the public not to broadly blame the Somali community.

Robbins’ letter demands detailed records of Omar’s communications with key players, her office staff, and the Minnesota Department of Education by May 5. Omar has not publicly responded to the latest demand.

Additional layer of recent scrutiny: Omar’s amended financial disclosures and dissolved winery Compounding questions about oversight of public funds, Omar is also facing intense Republican-led scrutiny over her personal finances. In her 2024 disclosure (filed in 2025), she and husband Tim Mynett reported combined assets valued between $6 million and $30 million - a dramatic increase from prior years - largely tied to two companies Mynett co-owns: eStCru LLC (a California winery) and Rose Lake Capital (a venture capital firm). After inquiries from the Office of Congressional Conduct and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), who requested records citing “serious public concerns,” Omar amended the filing in mid-April 2026. The new version lists joint assets at just $18,004 to $95,000, with the companies now valued at “none.” Her office blamed an “accounting error” in which liabilities were not properly subtracted and stated she is “not a millionaire.”

Notably, the eStCru winery LLC was officially terminated (dissolved) on April 4, 2026 - days before the amendment became public. Independent investigator Angela Rose (who also produced the Generation Hope video) previously visited the listed address and described the operation as a “phantom” or shell business: no active wine production, no tastings, no product available for purchase, and a facility sign confirming it had “ceased operation.” ZeroHedge and other outlets have reported on suspicions of inflated valuations and potential shell-company activity.

No criminal charges have been filed against Omar personally in any of these matters. Her office has defended the MEALS Act as emergency pandemic aid, distanced her from Feeding Our Future defendants, and called the disclosure revisions voluntary and accurate. Generation Hope’s supporters maintain it is a legitimate community organization operating within available space. Rose Lake Capital and eStCru have faced prior investor disputes, but Mynett has denied wrongdoing.

Still, the overlapping controversies - the earmark red flags, the state records demand, deep ties to individuals later implicated in fraud schemes, and the sudden financial disclosure swing followed by a business dissolution - have fueled outrage among critics who argue they reflect insufficient transparency around public funds and personal finances in Omar’s district. With the May 5 deadline approaching, lawmakers, watchdogs, and taxpayers are watching closely for any response.

Russia, UAE call for Strait of Hormuz negotiations

 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his United Arab Emirates counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the situation regarding the Strait of Hormuz in a phone call on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The two officials "discussed a number of international issues, including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and expressed a shared view on the need to resume negotiations in order to reach agreements as soon as possible on a long-term, sustainable resolution to the crisis, taking into account the legitimate interests of all countries in the region," the ministry stated.

The ministers also talked about bilateral cooperation and the upcoming entry into force of the free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and the UAE.

WH may use Defense Production Act to save Spirit

 The White House is considering using the Defense Production Act to try to rescue Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc., CBS News reported on Friday, citing United States officials with knowledge of the matter.

The Act grants the United States president authority to compel private businesses to put government contracts at the forefront in order to boost necessary supplies. It further makes it possible for government loans to be provided to the companies in question. Officials detailed that such a move would have to be greenlighted by Spirit's creditors.

US President Donald Trump previously confirmed his administration was looking into options that would help the airline. Sources revealed that the government could lend $500 billion to Spirit "at a reasonable rate interest," while becoming the top debtor. The company's excess capacity would be used by the Pentagon for troops and military cargo transporting, as well as other missions.

Dognosis publishes Phase-2 Trial in Journal of Clinical Oncology


A simple breath test powered by trained dogs can detect cancer with over 90% accuracy across seven major types of cancer, including at its earliest and most treatable stages. The results, from the largest study of its kind (Kulgod, et al., 2026), were published today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.


The test is straightforward: a person breathes normally into a cotton face mask for 10 minutes. The mask is sealed, stored, and later evaluated by trained detection dogs at a central laboratory. Each sample is assessed independently by at least three dogs, and their assessments are combined using an advanced Bayesian statistical model that weighs each dog's track record and the participant's background information. No blood is drawn, no scan is needed, and no fasting is required.


The study was conducted in collaboration with Medical Detection Dogs, a UK-based charity and world leader in canine bio-detection research that has previously demonstrated dogs can detect the odour of diseases including prostate and bladder cancer, Parkinson's disease, malaria, and COVID-19. Six hospitals in Karnataka, India participated (RadOn Cancer Centre, Karnataka Cancer Therapy and Research Institute, and Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute in Hubli; St John's Medical College, Aster CMI Hospital, and Narayana Health City in Bangalore), with 1,502 people in the final test group (283 with biopsy-confirmed cancer and 1,219 without). The dogs and model together correctly identified over 90% of cancers and over 91% of non-cancers across head and neck, breast, lung, gynecologic, upper and lower GI, and genitourinary cancers. Accuracy was just as high for early-stage disease (Stages I and II), where catching cancer early can dramatically improve survival.

"We've known for over two decades that dogs are capable of detecting multiple types of cancers with high accuracy," said Akash Kulgod, co-founder and CEO of Dognosis, the company behind the test. "The challenge has always been building a system around canine olfaction that is reproducible, scalable, and aimed at a clinical problem worth solving. Multi-cancer risk stratification from a single breath sample in countries like India is that problem, and this study shows that it can be done."


Dr. Basavaraj R. Patil, Chairman of the Karnataka Cancer Therapy and Research Institute (KCTRI) in Hubli and a co-author on the study, has practiced surgical oncology in the region for over three decades.
"We have initiated cancer screening through a dedicated van at our institute, which has increased outreach, but it is still a challenge to address the growing cancer incidence in India. A low-cost, repeatable, and non-invasive tool like this could be transformative, not only for early detection but also for monitoring whether treatment is working or detecting early signs of recurrence."


Claire Guest, co-founder of Medical Detection Dogs and a co-author on the study, said:
"We were delighted to collaborate with Dognosis to advise and support in the training of dogs to detect multiple cancers by odour. The results are staggering yet not surprising to us. Dogs have proved time and again that their ability to detect disease is superior to any other current options. We hope these results can be used to help advance and speed up diagnostic resources and screen many more people around the world."


Seven dogs took part in the study: four Beagles, one Labrador, one Labrador-Indie mix, and one Dutch Shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix, each trained over 10 weeks using reward-based methods. Analysis showed that fewer than 2% of variation in their responses was down to which individual dog was doing the assessment, meaning the system is consistent regardless of which dogs are on duty.


The study also showed early results from a next-generation version of the system that uses camera-based analysis of the dogs' sniffing behaviour to further refine accuracy. Dognosis is developing AI tools that read the dogs' behaviour and brain signals in real time, with the long-term goal of scaling the technology to screen millions of people a year. The publication is accompanied by an invited editorial and the authors have been invited to discuss the findings on the journal's podcast.


Dognosis is now preparing to evaluate the test in real-world programmes across multiple Indian states, with a U.S. study to follow.

Cell Therapy Slows Upper Limb Decline in Duchenne

 The investigational cell therapy deramiocel slowed upper limb functional decline in boys and young men with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, data from the phase III HOPE-3 trial showed.

At 12 months, the mean percent change from baseline in Performance of Upper Limb 2.0 (PUL 2.0) total score was −3.86 in the deramiocel group and −8.41 in the placebo group, a difference of 4.55 (P=0.029), reported Aravindhan Veerapandiyan, MD, of Arkansas Children's Hospital and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

This represented a 1.2-point difference on the PUL 2.0, corresponding to a 54% slowing of disease progression in 1 year, Veerapandiyan said in a late-breaking science session at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting.

Secondary endpoints included PUL 2.0 mid-level domain scores, which are closely linked to independence, and the Duchenne Video Assessment "Eat 10 Bites" score, which measures sustained feeding performance in a home setting. Mid-level PUL 2.0 scores indicated a 65% slowing of progression (P=0.008). The Eat 10 Bites scores at 12 months showed that deramiocel reduced decline in independent feeding by 83%.

Deramiocel also preserved left ventricular fraction (LVEF) and slowed late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), a measure of cardiac fibrosis, Veerapandiyan said. In LVEF, the treatment difference was 2.4% (P=0.041) at 12 months; in LGE, it was -3.0 segments (P=0.022). The therapy was safe and well tolerated, he added.

"The study met all the primary and secondary endpoints, showing both benefit in the skeletal muscle as well as cardiac," Veerapandiyan stated.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by mutations in the DMD gene. Loss of the protein dystrophin triggers a cascade of effects, including progressive degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscle, a pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic immune response that impairs repair, and a steady decline in function that can culminate in life-threatening cardiac events. The condition primarily affects males.

Deramiocel is a novel cellular therapy that demonstrated benefit on skeletal muscle function in the HOPE-2 phase II study of Duchenne and its open-label extension. The treatment consists of allogeneic cardiosphere-derived cells that have been shown to confer immunomodulatory and anti-fibrotic properties.

The phase III HOPE-3 trial assessed the efficacy and safety of deramiocel in late-ambulatory and non-ambulatory male Duchenne patients. The double-blind study randomized 106 Duchenne patients at least 10 years old to quarterly infusions of deramiocel (54 participants) or placebo (52 participants).

At enrollment, patients had a PUL 2.0 entry item score of at least 2 and an LVEF of at least 35%. All patients were on background stable corticosteroid therapy.

PUL 2.0 is a functional scale of upper limb performance, Veerapandiyan noted. The entry item begins with a starter task that establishes a patient's starting point on a 0 to 6 scale. The full assessment reflects the proximal-to-distal progression seen in Duchenne and includes 22 items across three domains: shoulder, elbow, and distal function. The maximum possible score is 42.

In HOPE-3, participants had a mean age of 15 years. Most (84.9%) were non-ambulatory, and 24.5% were receiving exon-skipping therapy. Just under half (45.3%) had a PUL 2.0 entry item score of 2 or 3, while the remainder scored 4, 5, or 6.

The overall safety profile of deramiocel was comparable to placebo, Veerapandiyan said. "The mild-to-moderate adverse events that were related to deramiocel were more frequent in the treated group, and this consisted of flu-like symptoms that were transient and resolved within 24 to 48 hours after infusion," he pointed out. One serious adverse event occurred in the deramiocel group (1.9%) and five occurred in the placebo group (9.6%).

In July 2025, the FDA rejected a biologics license application from Capricor Therapeutics, citing insufficient clinical evidence from the HOPE-2 trial and requesting additional data. The agency is now re-evaluating the application with results from HOPE-3 and is expected to issue a decision by August 22.

Most Lethal Cancers Get Shortchanged by Federal Funding, Study Shows

Highly lethal cancers received disproportionately less federal funding compared with other cancers that have better survival odds, according to a study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute.

An analysis of nine types of cancer showed that small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and pancreatic cancer had the highest mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs) but received less funding per death during fiscal year 2025 than breast cancer and prostate cancer, which had the two lowest MIRs. Funding per death averaged $2,818 for SCLC and $8,945 for pancreatic cancer as compared with $69,800 and $126,992 for breast and prostate cancer, respectively. Liver cancer and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) had the third and fourth highest MIRs and received $10,447 and $1,754 per death, respectively.

The findings suggest that the framework for prioritizing federal funding for cancer should integrate measures such as mortality and survival, in addition to incidence, which has been a principal influence, reported Chirayu Mohindroo, MD, and Anish Thomas, MD, MBBS, of the National Cancer Institute, in a research letter in JAMA Network Open.

"These findings indicate that cancers with the highest lethality receive disproportionately lower levels of federal research support," they wrote. "Prioritizing these cancers could help direct limited resources toward diseases with the greatest potential to reduce suffering, particularly as outcomes continue to improve for less lethal malignant neoplasms."

"Current funding patterns reflect historical progress in specific cancer types," they added. "Cancers with limited advocacy or philanthropic support may depend largely on federal funding, magnifying the effects of funding imbalances, while industry investment, which often tracks incidence rather than lethality, may further reinforce these patterns. Although this misalignment has been recognized for more than a decade, our findings indicate that funding patterns remain largely unchanged."

The study shines a light on the "critical funding disparities that disproportionately affect the most lethal cancers," said Suneel Kamath, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic. He recently reported a study of federal funding for 12 types of cancer over a 10-year period. The largest allocations per death went to cervical cancer, breast cancer, and melanoma, which were as much as 10 times higher than per-death spending on lung, colorectal, pancreas, liver, and uterine cancers.

"Pancreatic cancer has been in the news a lot recently due to major advances in KRAS inhibitors and vaccines for adjuvant therapy," Kamath told MedPage Today. "This is all, of course, great news, but we have to wonder, could we have gotten here 10 years ago with better funding? I think the answer is yes. We could be much further along for a number of other deadly diseases like colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancers, too."

Kamath quibbled with some of the findings and methodology, such as singling out SCLC when NSCLC was far more common and received a smaller per-death allocation of federal dollars ($1,754 vs $2,818). Additionally, his own study showed that gastrointestinal cancers are underfunded "across the board." The authors' mortality estimates, which they calculated with their own methodology, differed for some cancers in comparison to estimates from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Nonetheless, "their basic conclusions are the same."

"In the end, we need to evolve beyond an advocacy-based federal appropriation strategy," said Kamath. "Currently, cancers with the most advocates and dollars to lobby lawmakers get the most funding. What we need instead is a system that delineates relevant criteria (e.g., incidence, mortality, cost, number of young people affected, degree of morbidity/disability, impact on quality of life), then calculates the impact of individual cancers on our society and then appropriates funding accordingly."

"The dead cannot advocate for themselves, but more funding in the right diseases might have kept them alive longer in the first place," he added.

Mohindroo and Thomas analyzed cancer incidence and 5-year survival using data from the SEER registries for 2015-2021 and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries' Cancer in North American Explorer for 2022. They extracted NIH funding data for 2025 from public reports. They also calculated funding per incident case, per estimated death, and MIRs.

The results showed that breast cancer (272,361), prostate cancer (248,541), and lung cancer (SCLC and NSCLC combined, 211,115) had the highest incidences. Estimated 5-year survival ranged from 9.1% for SCLC and 13.3% for pancreatic cancer to 91.7% for breast cancer and 97.9% for prostate cancer.

Breast cancer received the most NIH funding (~$1.6 billion), followed by prostate cancer ($663 million). SCLC received the least funding ($63 million), followed by stomach cancer ($105 million), NSCLC ($227 million), liver cancer ($291 million), ovarian cancer ($420 million), and pancreatic cancer ($440 million).

Estimated deaths ranged from 5,219 for prostate cancer to 129,161 for NSCLC. Colorectal cancer accounted for 49,576 deaths and pancreatic cancer for 49,211. An estimated 22,240 patients died of SCLC. SCLC had the highest MIR (0.909), followed by pancreatic cancer (0.867), liver cancer (0.780), and NSCLC (0.692). MIRs for breast and prostate cancer were 0.083 and 0.021, respectively.

NSCLC had the lowest average funding per death, followed by SCLC, stomach cancer (6,175), and pancreatic cancer.
