'NYT: Mojtaba Khamenei said to pursue nukes'

 Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is significantly more interested in advancing the country's nuclear capabilities than his late father and predecessor, The New York Times reported on Friday, citing officials briefed on US intelligence agencies' assessments.

His father, Ali Khamenei, was killed at the start of the war in an Israeli strike aided by US intelligence. He had vowed not to develop a nuclear weapon, and many American officials thought his reluctance was sincere.

The outlet added that the intelligence community's public conclusion before the war was that Iran was not developing a weapon and that Ali Khamenei had never reauthorized the program he suspended in 2003. However, US officials warned that the majority of the intelligence regarding Mojtaba Khamenei's views comes from before the war.
