The United States Commerce Department is investigating whether Chinese artificial intelligence companies, including Moonshot AI, gained access to advanced US chips, The Information reported.
The Bureau of Industry and Security opened the inquiry after US officials accused Moonshot of using Anthropic's Fable model to develop its Kimi K3 model. The investigation could reportedly lead to restrictions on Moonshot's access to US technology.
In April, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios accused China of stealing US AI technology, an accusation China dismissed as "baseless." On Wednesday, he alleged that Moonshot built a "sophisticated internal platform" to extract knowledge from US models on a large scale, while changing access methods to avoid detection.
