Hamas' newly appointed leader, Khalil al-Hayya, highlighted Palestine's importance to regional stability in his first statement as the head of the political bureau of the movement.
"What the region is witnessing proves that the stability of the Palestinian people is the key to the stability of the region," Al-Hayya said in a statement. "To the people of Gaza, we understand how much you have suffered and continue to suffer, and the pain you endure. We will continue working in every way to alleviate your suffering and pain and restore Gaza to its former glory."
Al-Hayya added that Hamas' top priority was securing a full end to Israeli military operations and the "complete liberation" of Gaza, and the second priority is ensuring Gaza remains part of the Palestinian entity and securing the release of Palestinian prisoners. He went on to warn the international community that the "standard of justice collapses entirely if you fail to protect the people of Gaza."
