France bans social networks for children under 15

The French parliament adopted a bill on Tuesday that restricts social network access for children under the age of 15.

The law is set to be implemented in two stages, with September 1st being the date after which the opening of new accounts for under-15s will be prohibited, followed by a blanket ban on children's use of social networks after January 2027.

The law also expands an existing ban on smartphone use in secondary schools, after previously being limited to primary schools. The text does not specify any sanctions for users for failure to comply with the new law. Platforms will be required to set up an age verification system and monitor adherence.
