Chinese electric-vehicle maker Xpeng said Sunday that China was close to producing a model capable of beating Tesla's Model Y, as the Volkswagen-backed company pushes deeper into Europe's premium car market.
Xpeng co-founder He Xiaopeng told the Financial Times the industry was "not far from beating Model Y" after the company unveiled its L03 SUV in Munich. The vehicle starts at €35,600, below the Model Y's €39,990 entry price, and is Xpeng's first model launched simultaneously in China and Europe.
Xpeng is also discussing a second European manufacturing site with Volkswagen and other carmakers, with Germany among the possible locations.
