Hossein Mozaffar, a member of Iran's Expediency Council, said in an interview with IRNA, the full text of which was posted on Saturday, that the country started attacking ships going through the Omani section of the Strait of Hormuz, because "the enemy transports its military equipment through that route and via Omani waters to endanger our national security."
The Iranian official accused the United States of deceiving Tehran by promising a deal and a ceasefire, only to re-equip its forces in the region. He insisted that Iran's strategy cannot only focus on defense, but rather be "preventive."
Mozaffar explained that Iran is facing a "dilemma," as Washington's military bases are located in the neighboring Arab countries. "We are not at war with our neighboring Arab countries and do not want to be, but we should not ignore the presence of these bases ... The presence of US bases on their soil is a tool for violating Iran's sovereignty and national interests," he stressed.
