US Senate committee okays Chinese cars curb bill

The United States Senate Commerce Committee greenlighted on Wednesday a bill that could potentially make Washington's rules on Chinese automakers stricter.

The legislation was proposed by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of ‌Ohio and Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan back in April, with an aim to ban vehicle sales by companies in which ownership by Chinese entities surpasses 15%. Should the bill be adopted later on, Mercedes-Benz Group AG could be affected, as Chinese investors hold an almost 20% stake in the firm.

The Committee now needs to report the bill to the entire Senate, where it will be seen whether it will be taken up for debate and later to the voting floor.
