Iranian attacks, Bab el-Mandeb threats require international response - GCC

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said Iranian attacks on GCC states and Houthi threats to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait require immediate accountability and a firm international stance to ensure respect for international law, freedom of navigation and protection of energy infrastructure.

Speaking at a UN Security Council high-level open debate in New York on Wednesday, Albudaiwi said Iran had continued launching ballistic missile and drone attacks against GCC countries and others since February 28, describing the actions as violations of international law and the UN Charter.

He also accused Iran of threatening freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz through attacks on commercial vessels, laying naval mines, attempts to impose mandatory shipping routes and repeated threats to close the waterway.
