Japan and the UK are jointly establishing a specialized fund to support startups that develop dual-use technologies with both civilian and defense applications, Nikkei reported on Thursday.
The outlet added that the governments are debating the fund's size, which could see contributions from both sides totaling several billion yen, and would support firms that create dual-use technologies in areas including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, drones, and space.
According to Nikkei, the fund will be addressed in a joint statement on economic security and a document on advanced technology collaboration at Sunday's Japan-UK summit in London. Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, the Japan External Trade Organization, and the British government's Innovate UK research-funding agency are set to sign a memorandum of understanding establishing the fund.
