Death toll rises to 132 after Rio's deadliest police raid

The Public Defender's Office of Rio de Janeiro reported on Wednesday that 132 people were killed in the police raid carried out Tuesday in the favelas of Alemao and Penha, doubling the initial figure released by the authorities. The updated toll came after grieving residents laid out at least 60 bodies in a public square early in the morning.

The large-scale operation, called the deadliest in Rio's history, targeted the Red Command group and involved more than 2,500 police officers, armored vehicles, and helicopters. Governor Claudio Castro said the raid had been planned for two months and was based on a thorough investigation. One of those arrested is accused of being a key drug trafficker for the gang.

Earlier, the UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the operation’s toll and urged Brazil to conduct prompt and effective investigations into the deadly police actions.
