Starmer tells Labour MPs he will stay on as PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on Monday that he intends to remain the head of government. His comments came after Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar urged him to resign ahead of Scotland's parliamentary election in May.

"After having fought so hard for the chance to change our country, I'm not prepared to walk away from my mandate and my responsibility to my country, or to plunge us into chaos as others have done," Starmer declared during a meeting with Labour members of parliament.

Starmer's political position was further complicated by the controversy arising from former Labour politician and member of the House of Lords Peter Mandelson's involvement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer had appointed Mandelson as the British ambassador to the United States, the post he held until September last year. The scandal resulted in the resignations of Starmer's communications head and chief of staff.
