Target Corp. announced it will be among the first companies to test contextual advertising on ChatGPT this month in partnership with OpenAI Inc.
The pilot will feature sponsored messages from Target and Roundel, the retailer's media business, appearing alongside shopping-related conversations. Ads will be labeled and shown separately from ChatGPT responses, with placement based on keywords in a user's prompt.
The company said that traffic from ChatGPT to its site has grown by 40% monthly. "By extending our brand experience into conversational AI environments, we can better understand how to use these platforms to connect guests to the right products faster, in the moments that matter," Target wrote in a statement.
