The United States will withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, according to a CBS report quoting senior defense officials. The move would be in line with US President Donald Trump's threats to downscale the US military presence in the European country, and following his criticism of Berlin for its conduct regarding Iran.
On Thursday, Trump hinted he could recall US troops from Spain and Italy as well, after openly speaking against German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over his lack of support during the Iran conflict and his handling of the crisis in Ukraine. Sources indicated that some of the troops returning from Germany would eventually be redeployed to other areas after initial arrival in the US.
Germany remains one of the countries hosting the largest number of US soldiers on its territory, after Japan.
