United States President Donald Trump cleared the bipartisan Election Assistance Commission (EAC) ahead of the midterm elections, removing its last three commissioners, Politico reported, citing a White House official and three other sources familiar with the dismissals.
Democratic Commissioners Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland were fired, while Republican Christy McCormick was allowed to resign. The official justified the dismissals, saying that days after the US Supreme Court ruling in the Slaughter case, the president "reserves the right to remove individuals that may not be totally aligned with the important task of securing America’s elections and ensuring every legal vote is counted."
These removals leave the agency empty and unable to act. Any future members must be approved by the Senate and the seats must be split evenly between Democrats and Republicans.
