Britain will become the first country to use Kyiv’s vast Avenger repository, drawing on millions of battlefield images of Russian forces and weapons to train AI systems designed to protect military sites and critical infrastructure.
Britain has become the first country to gain access to Ukraine’s vast “Avenger” battlefield repository, opening millions of images of Russian military equipment and personnel to U.K. defense and technology groups.
The archive, described by the Ministry of Defense as a “goldmine,” contains imagery of Russian tanks, air defenses, troops, drones and artillery systems gathered during the war.
The data will initially be used to train technology to identify spies, saboteurs and other hostile actors attempting to penetrate British military sites.
A Battlefield Archive for British Security
Ukraine assembled the repository using thousands of cameras and infrared sensors deployed across the country.
British systems will now be trained on that material to improve their ability to recognize and respond to threats, including drones and attempts to gather intelligence around military facilities.
The Ministry of Defense said the technology would first be used to protect bases “from protesters and hostile actors trying to gain intelligence.”
The initiative follows heightened concern over Russian activity in Britain. The draft agreement comes after accusations that Moscow used drones launched from its shadow fleet to monitor British nuclear weapons, while the Royal Navy disrupted what was described as a covert Russian submarine operation in UK waters in April.
AI Beyond Military Bases
Officials see potential applications well beyond defense installations.
Technology trained on the Ukrainian archive could eventually be deployed around airports, prisons, hospitals, railways and energy infrastructure.
The battlefield material is expected to help AI systems learn how to identify emergencies and unusual activity around critical infrastructure more quickly.
Three British startups, Bristol-based Sintela, Oxford’s Mind Foundry and London-based Skyral, are already using the data in pilot projects.
One project would turn buried fiber-optic cables into a large AI-enabled sensor network for the British military.
Data to Shape Drones and Robots
British defense companies and scientists will also be able to use the repository in work on AI-powered computer chips for future drones and robotic systems.
If successful, the technology could support machines designed to operate longer, react faster, and function in environments where existing systems face limitations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham signed the agreement in Ukraine on Monday.
Burnham also agreed to provide Kyiv with classified information relating to British components used in Storm Shadow missiles, allowing Ukraine to manufacture the long-range weapon for its war against Russia.
Moscow Criticizes UK Role
The Kremlin meanwhile slammed Britain’s expanding involvement.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said: “Britain is methodically and regularly adding fuel to the fire and methodically and regularly plotting to prevent any progress in the peace process.”
Burnham rejected Moscow’s criticism during remarks in Kyiv.
“Despite Russia’s outrageous threats to my country, we will continue our support for Ukraine,” he said. “This is the moment to keep up the pressure on Russia, the moment to squeeze their ability to fund this illegal war.”
Kyiv Presses Allies for More Support
During the visit, Burnham chaired his first coalition-of-the-willing meeting alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Macron told participants that recent deadly attacks on Ukrainian cities showed the need to increase deliveries of interceptors.
Zelensky said Ukraine required $27bn, or £19.8bn, to confront Russia over the winter and proposed using frozen Russian assets held overseas to help finance the effort.
For Britain, however, the Avenger agreement adds a technological dimension: direct access to a repository built from the battlefield itself, and an opportunity to turn Ukraine’s wartime surveillance data into security systems for use at home.
