Japan 'strongly protests' Putin's visit to Kuril Islands

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated on Thursday that his country's government "strongly protests" Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed Kuril Islands.

In an X post, Motegi insisted that four of the Kuril Islands, including Iturup, which Putin visited, were "inherently Japanese territory both historically and under international law."

Motegi's reaction came after Putin's first official visit to the Kuril Islands. Russia claims sovereignty over the entire archipelago, which it has administered since 1945, during the Soviet era. Japan claims four islands, including Iturup, as its own.
