'Axios: IAEA may move nuclear material from Syria'

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will remove the nuclear material stored at a hidden facility in Syria after the United States and Syria reached an agreement on the matter, Axios reported on Monday, citing US and Israeli officials.

According to the report, the deal aims to prevent a possible escalation between Israel, Syria, and possibly Turkey. The dramatic series of threats and diplomatic maneuvers surrounding the secret facility, which dragged on for months before a deal was reached several weeks ago, was kept under wraps, the sources said.

Israel has been monitoring the Site 99 facility in Syria for more than two years, where the former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime stored nuclear material for the Al-Kibar nuclear reactor project, the report added. "We think everybody is happy with the result. Hopefully we will be able to kick off the removal process soon and end it before the end of the year," a US official said.
