HHS proposes stricter oversight of food ingredients

 The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Monday proposed a rule requiring producers to notify the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when adding the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) label to substances which are added to human or animal food. Furthermore, the HHS submitted the first proposed definition of ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

"Nearly 60% of the American diet is made up of ultra-processed foods, and childhood obesity now affects more than one in five American children," Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement, adding that transformation of the food system is required for bettering the health of Americans. It was noted that the proposals would further implement President Donald Trump's Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) strategy.
