Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that his country did not start the war in Ukraine, but was "forced" into that conflict by NATO's "military exploration" of Russian territories and the establishment of military bases.
"It's not us who started the war, but the war was started against us. They shouldn't have encouraged aggressive nationalism and Russophobia in Ukraine in order to turn it into a tool for fighting Russia. NATO shouldn't have started military exploration of our historic territories in the interest of NATO. They should not have planned their bases there," Putin said at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club.
