Adams drops scores of lawsuits against upstate NY towns refusing migrants

Mayor Eric Adams’ administration has quietly dropped legal action against more than a dozen upstate counties that issued emergency orders banning migrants from being bused to their doorstep.

The city filed a lawsuit in June suing 31 counties over the orders, describing the edicts as “misguided and unlawful.”

The emergency orders came in response to Adams announcing his administration would begin busing asylum seekers to private hotels outside of the Big Apple.

City Hall confirmed to The Post on Monday that it has dropped 17 counties from the lawsuit. The move was first reported by Newday.

The legal challenges were abandoned after a judge ruled that the city would have to bring each case in the individual counties, making it a logistical nightmare for the Big Apple’s legal department.

Meanwhile, 10 more lawsuits filed by the city against other counties were dismissed after it was determined that those counties didn’t even have emergency orders on the books barring migrants.

That leaves just four counties named in the city’s lawsuit — Dutchess, Orange, Onondaga and Rockland. All four counties have also sued New York City over the relocation of migrants.

“|We are grateful to the counties across the state who are welcoming migrants, but we have been clear since the start that this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for New York — and every community in the state must do their part to manage this crisis,” said Jonah Allon, a City Hall rep.

Adams has repeatedly called on Gov. Kathy Hochul to enlist other counties to help relieve the stress the more than 110,000 migrants that have arrived in the Big Apple since the spring.

New York City is currently caring for nearly 60,000 migrants.

Trump to skip second GOP debate, will rally with striking autoworkers in Detroit

Former President Donald Trump will skip next week’s second Republican presidential primary debate and hold a rally with striking autoworkers and other skilled tradesmen instead.

Trump, 77, is planning to hold the event, which will include a prime-time speech, in Detroit on Sept. 27 — the same night his GOP rivals will convene in California at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum for the second primary debate, a source familiar with the former president’s plans told The Post on Monday.

The move signals that Trump, who holds a nearly 44 point lead over his closest GOP primary opponent, is already looking past the GOP primaries and focusing his attention on defeating President Biden in 2024, in part, by courting union members in one the states he lost to the 80-year-old incumbent in 2020.

Next week’s rally won’t just be for autoworkers. The Trump campaign is planning on packing the room with more than 500 tradesmen, including plumbers, pipe-fitters and electricians, the New York Times first reported on Monday.

Trump blasted Biden over the weekend, accusing him of not supporting the interests of American auto workers by promoting electric vehicles.

“The United Autoworkers are being sold down the ‘drain’ with this all Electric Car SCAM,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday. “They’ll be made in China, under Crooked Joe’s CHINA FIRST POLICY.”

“AUTOWORKERS, VOTE FOR TRUMP – I’LL MAKE YOU VICTORIOUS & RICH. IF YOUR ‘LEADERS’ WON’T ENDORSE ME, VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE, NOW. WITH THE DEMOCRATS & CROOKED JOE CALLING THE SHOTS, YOU’LL BE JOBLESS & PENNILESS WITHIN 4 YEARS. REMEMBER, BIDEN IS A CROOK WHO HAS BEEN PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY CHINA, & OTHERS. He is a Manchurian Candidate!!!” the former president added.

The strike against Detroit’s Big Three automakers – Ford, General Motors and Stellantis – entered its fourth day on Monday, with about 13,000 combined workers represented by the United Auto Workers union refusing to work at three factories unless they’re offered better wages and benefits.

The UAW union notably refused to endorse Biden in the spring, with President Shawn Fain expressing serious concerns about his administration’s preference for electric vehicles.

But Fain has also charged that a second Trump presidency would be a “disaster.”

Biden has not recommended terms for a deal – the UAW is demanding a 40% pay raise for workers and a 32-hour work week – but he has endorsed the strike and has blasted “record profits” that he says automakers have not “shared fairly” with workers.

Trump lost Michigan to Biden by less than 3 percentage points in 2020 after previously defeating Hillary Clinton in Great Lake State by less than 1 percentage point.

The former president skipped the first GOP presidential debate in Milwaukee last month, opting instead to do an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – that aired at the same time as candidates took the stage.

More SE Asia firms consider U.S. IPOs, filling void left by China peers

Several Southeast Asian companies are considering listing in the United States, banking on strong investor appetite for emerging market growth in the absence of Chinese stock offerings.

Senior executives in leading SME digital financing platform Funding Societies, Singapore-based entertainment firm Gushcloud International and Thai insurance technology firm Sunday told Reuters they were looking into New York as one of their initial public offering (IPO) venues.

This comes on top of recently announced plans by Vietnamese internet company VNG Corp and Philippine real estate company DoubleDragon Corp's Hotel101 Global to list in the U.S., filling a void left by Chinese companies which hit the pause button on U.S. IPOs after political tensions with Washington intensified, Beijing tightened scrutiny of domestic firms seeking overseas listings and China's own economy slowed.

"China's shadow into the ASEAN region has shrunk since the world reopened after the pandemic," said Leif Schneider, senior legal adviser at law firm DFDL Vietnam.

"Chinese competitors have gradually been pushed to the sidelines due to homemade restrictions and the ensuing domestic economic fallout," he added. "These factors have enabled some of their ASEAN rivals to step out into the spotlight."

ASEAN, the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, includes Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. The bloc's biggest car e-commerce platform Carsome Group has also said it was considering various global exchanges, including those in the U.S., for a potential listing.

Southeast Asian firms have raised about $101 million via IPOs in the U.S. so far this year, way below last year's $919 million, but bankers expect the pace to pick up over the next 12 months as companies hunt for new sources of capital after relying on private funds for the last few years.

In contrast, Chinese firms have raised $463.7 million via U.S listings so far this year, slightly above 2022 levels but a fraction of the $12.96 billion and $12.48 billion raised in 2021 and 2020 respectively, according to LSEG data.

For investors seeking emerging market exposure, Southeast Asia fits the bill, because of the region's strong economic growth and increasing population, analysts say.

For example, growth in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest economy, accelerated at its highest rate in three quarters in the latest April-June period, boosted by strong household and government spending, data showed.

Some Southeast Asia companies seeking listings in the U.S. look to raise between $300 million and $1 billion, with valuations ranging from $1.5 billion to $8 billion, bankers said, without naming any firms.

The plans by Southeast Asian firms to list in the U.S. should also cheer Wall Street banks in Asia, who generate about a third of their revenues from equity capital market (ECM) deals which all but dried up with Chinese IPOs.

"For some of the U.S. investors who were focused on emerging markets, their tech exposure largely came from Chinese companies because they were the biggest names listed in the U.S.," said Sunil Khaitan, Bank of America's ECM head for Southeast Asia.

"With the current cautious stance around China, these investors are on the lookout for some of the other emerging markets names," he added.

DIVERSE RETURNS

For companies, the U.S. offers several advantages.

Funding Societies' co-founder and group CEO Kelvin Teo told Reuters the U.S. was one of the company's preferred options because of it would provide a deep pool of capital and global investor base.

Andrew Lim, Gushcloud's chief financial officer, also said a U.S. listing would expose the company to "investor familiarity with fast growing new economy companies".

Companies in sectors including logistics, technology, mining, electric vehicles and renewable energy are most likely to seek IPOs both locally and abroad, said Deloitte Southeast Asia Disruptive Events Advisory Leader Tay Hwee Ling.

"International investors are seeing the value of portfolio diversification that Southeast Asia provides," Tay added.

The expected pickup in Southeast Asian listings, however, could get derailed by share volatility and stringent investor scrutiny, analysts say.

Shares of Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast have jumped some 75% since its debut in August, but not without strong volatility in thin trade.

Most U.S. investors, however, are savvy enough when it comes to due diligence.

"U.S. investors are generally proficient and experienced in evaluating opportunities across different sectors, but it is usually helpful for Southeast Asia companies to educate investors on any country specific factors that may affect their business," said Art Anuruk Karoonyavanich, head of capital markets at DBS based in Singapore

Astellas/Iveric: Positive 24-Month Topline Results in Phase 3 Geographic Atrophy Study

Astellas Pharma US, Inc.  (TSE: 4503, President and CEO: Naoki Okamura, "Astellas") today announced positive 24-month topline results from the Phase 3 GATHER2 clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of IZERVAY™ (avacincaptad pegol intravitreal solution), a complement C5 inhibitor for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Topline results demonstrated that the IZERVAY monthly dosing regimen met the primary objective to significantly slow GA growth compared to sham at 24 months. Additionally, the treatment effect with the every other month dosing regimen for IZERVAY showed a similar reduction in the rate of GA growth versus sham.

Overall, safety after 24 months of treatment was consistent with previously reported 12-month data, with no new safety signals identified. There was one case of culture-positive endophthalmitis and one case of non-serious intraocular inflammation. There were no cases of occlusive or non-occlusive retinal vasculitis or ischemic neuropathy. The rate of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) was 12% in patients treated with IZERVAY and 9% in those treated with sham.

Dhaval Desai, PharmD, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Iveric Bio, An Astellas Company
"We are excited about these results, which show that IZERVAY continued to slow the rate of GA growth with a consistent safety profile after two years of treatment. We look forward to sharing results at a future scientific congress and with regulatory agencies."

IZERVAY was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on August 4, 2023, for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency.

Astellas is reviewing potential financial impacts of these results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.

Newsom Boosts AI "Misinformation" Fears, Complains Of "Micro-Cults" Around Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan

 by Christina Maas via ReclaimTheNet,org,

In yet another criticism of free speech, Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom of California is setting his sights on artificial intelligence (AI), voicing his concern over supposed “misinformation” circulating online.

Newsom flagged misinformation as a pivotal issue during a Bloomberg AI interview, signifying a growing avenue where possible free speech issues arise.

Newsom’s concern isn’t merely hypothetical.

Overwhelmed by fear of a so-called online “micro-cult” scenario, he cited popular commentator Dr. Jordan Peterson and podcast heavyweight Joe Rogan, among others, as alleged promoters of potentially harmful viewpoints.

"[Separately] I really worry about the misinformation, disinformation...

...about what's happening with our country, but I really worry about these micro-cults that my kids are in

...I say micro-cults because I don’t know if there’s a better way to describe it.

...My son is asking me about Andrew Tate, Jordan Peterson. And then immediately he’s talking about Joe Rogan. And I’m like; here it is, the pathway,” Newsom said.

That’s not to say Newsom is entirely anti-AI; quite the contrary.

He revealed his regular use of AI, crediting it for paving paths his administration wouldn’t have otherwise traversed.

It even bested him and his team at drafting his State of the State speech, he claimed, and he appeared rather pleased with the comparative function of AI services Bard and ChatGPT.

And, of course, "democracy" itself is at risk...

"We’ve talked to some friends, and you may know them well, I won't name them, who say this is the last quote unquote fair and free election of our lifetime.

These are pretty credible people.

Unless we dramatically do things differently. And some would suggest that's not the case, that already the ability for bots to… direct people into these micro cults, already is outsized in terms of its influence.

That's pretty alarming when you think about it in those terms."

Interestingly, ChatGPT has been previously revealed to harbor a partisan bias.
