Long Island DA reveals 3 twisted ‘rules’ that made MS-13 a plague in the suburbs

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said Long Island couldn’t have taken on MS-13 without a little help from the feds — as he revealed the migrant gang’s three twisted rules that made them the most dangerous in the Empire State.

Tierney said during an exclusive sit-down with The Post that migrant crews like the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua wreak havoc in the New York metropolitan area, but MS-13 poses a greater threat because prestige among the ranks is gained solely through violence and murder.

“That’s the purpose of MS-13, to be the biggest, baddest, most violent gang in the world,” he said. “They considered murder part and parcel of what they did. And that’s how you gained prestige and respect and moved up in the gang, by committing outrageous acts of violence, including murder.

“In the ethos of the gang the best way to accomplish that would be with your hands, a club machete,” Tierney said. “Violence for the MS-13 is not necessarily in furtherance of economic benefit.”

He said his office’s success in shutting down much of the gang on his turf hinges largely on the feds.

“The reason why it’s gotten significantly better is primarily the federal government — the FBI, the US Attorney’s Office. And I was part of that, but it was those agencies. They took a lot of these violent actors off the streets and made it better.”

MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha 13, was formed by immigrants from El Salvador in the US who fled civil war in their country in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to federal officials.

Initially meant to protect migrants from violence, the gang grew into one of the most notorious criminal enterprises in the country, relying more on violent attacks than traditional criminal activities.

Gang members have three rules that dictate death sentences — no member can cooperate with police, no outsider can disrespect the gang, and rival gangbangers are to be executed on sight, Tierney said.

In New York, MS-13 established a strong presence on Long Island, peaking in 2015, leaving behind a trail of ruthless and merciless violence against even helpless teenagers.

In October, a gang hanger-on nicknamed “Little Devil” was sentenced to 50 years in prison for luring four men to a local park where a gang of MS-13 thugs hacked them to death.

Leniz Escobar, 24, was convicted in 2022 of four counts of murder in aid of racketeering and one count of racketeering in connection with the horrifying crime.

In July, Alexi Saenz, 29 — the reputed former head of the Sailors Locos Salvatruchas Westside clique — admitted he was behind a series of slayings that included the deaths of Nisa Mickens, 15, and her 16-year-old friend, Kayla Cuevas, who were beaten and hacked to death in 2016.

In March 2024 police in Suffolk County said two severed heads and other scattered body parts found at a Babylon park were believed to be linked to MS-13.

MS-13 associate Leniz Escobar, 23, was so malicious that she was nicknamed “Little Devil” by the gang.

Tren de Aragua, a more recent migrant menace in the Big Apple and surrounding suburbs, exploited city funded shelters in the five boroughs by recruiting new members and spearheading illegal operations.

Despite their capacity for violence, TdA largely relies on drug, gun and human trafficking, and grab-and-go robberies by crews of moped-riding migrants — focusing more on illicit profits than assault and murder.

Both MS-13 and Tren de Aragua were designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration, which has launched nationwide raids to expel illegal immigrants.

Astronaut crew docks with space station to replace 'Butch and Suni'

A SpaceX capsule delivered four astronauts to the International Space Station early on Sunday in a NASA crew-swap mission that will allow a pair of stuck astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, to return home after nine months on the orbiting lab.

About 29 hours since launching at 7:03 p.m. ET on Friday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Crew-10 astronauts' SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule docked to the ISS at 12:04 a.m. ET (0404 GMT) on Sunday.

They were welcomed by the station's seven-member crew, which includes Wilmore and Williams - veteran NASA astronauts and retired Navy test pilots who have remained on the station after problems with Boeing's Starliner capsule forced NASA to bring it back empty.

Otherwise a routine crew rotation flight, the Crew-10 mission is a long-awaited first step to bring Wilmore and Williams back to Earth - part of a plan set by NASA last year that has been given greater urgency by President Donald Trump since he took office in January.

Wilmore and Williams are scheduled to depart the ISS on Wednesday as early as 4 a.m. ET (0800 GMT), along with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Hague and Gorbunov flew to the ISS in September on a Crew Dragon craft with two empty seats for Wilmore and Williams, and that craft has been attached to the station since.

The Crew-10 crew, scheduled to stay on the station for roughly six months, includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.

The crew-swap mission became entangled in politics as Trump and his adviser Elon Musk, who is also SpaceX's CEO, urged a quicker Crew-10 launch. They claimed, without evidence, that Trump's predecessor Joe Biden had abandoned Wilmore and Williams on the station for political reasons.

Having seen their mission turn into a normal NASA rotation to the ISS, Wilmore and Williams have been doing scientific research and conducting routine maintenance with the other five astronauts.

Williams told reporters this month that she was looking forward to returning home to see her two dogs and family. "It's been a roller coaster for them, probably a little bit more so than for us," she said.

Russia, Ukraine continue air attacks with ceasefire prospects uncertain

Russia and Ukraine traded heavy aerial blows overnight, with both sides on Saturday reporting more than 100 enemy drones over their respective territories.

The attacks comes less than 24 hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss details of the American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine.

Putin told a press conference on Thursday that he supported a truce in principle but set out a host of details that need to be clarified before it is agreed. Kyiv has already endorsed the truce proposal, although Ukrainian officials have publicly raised doubts as to whether Moscow will commit to such a deal.

Speaking to reporters in Kyiv on Saturday, after virtual talks between Western allies hosted by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelenskyy voiced Ukraine’s support for the 30-day full ceasefire proposal to discuss a longer-term peace plan, but said Russia would attempt to derail talks with conditions and “buts”.

Starmer has told allies to “keep the pressure” on Putin to back a ceasefire in Ukraine, hailing Ukraine as the “party of peace.” Starmer said Putin will “sooner or later” have to “come to the table.

In a statement earlier on Saturday, Zelenskyy had accused Moscow of building up forces along the border.

“The build up of Russian forces indicates that Moscow intends to keep ignoring diplomacy. It is clear that Russia is prolonging the war,” he said.

However, Zelenskyy stressed that if Russia did not agree with the U.S. proposal there would be “specific, harsh and straightforward” response from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

He also said that Kyiv’s troops were maintaining their presence in Russia’s Kursk region after Trump said Friday that “thousands” of Ukrainian troops had been surrounded by the Russian military.

“The operation of our forces in the designated areas of the Kursk region continues,” Zelenskyy said. “Our troops continue to hold back Russian and North Korean groupings in the Kursk region. There is no encirclement of our troops.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Saturday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In the call, they discussed next steps to follow up on recent meetings in Saudi Arabia and agreed to continue working towards restoring communication between the United States and Russia, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.

Ukraine’s air force said Saturday that Russia had launched a barrage of 178 drones and two ballistic missiles over the country overnight. The attack was a mixture of Shahed-type drones and imitation drones designed to confuse air defenses. Some 130 drones were shot down, while 38 more failed to reach their targets.

Russia attacked energy facilities, causing significant damage, striking energy infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions, Ukraine’s private energy company DTEK said in a statement on Saturday. Some residents were left without electricity.

“The damage is significant. Energy workers are already working on the ground. We are doing everything possible to restore power to homes as soon as possible,” the energy firm said.

Falling drone debris in Russia’s Volgograd region sparked a fire in the Krasnoarmeysky district of the city, close to a Lukoil oil refinery, according to Gov. Andrei Bocharov, who provided no further details. Nearby airports temporarily halted flights, local media outlets reported. No casualties were reported.

The Volgograd refinery has been targeted by Kyiv’s forces on several occasions since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, most recently in a drone attack on Feb. 15.

Disruptions in Availability of Hemodialysis Bloodlines - Letter to Health Care Providers

 March 14, 2025

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware that the U.S. is experiencing interruptions in the supply of hemodialysis bloodlines because of recent supplier issues. The disruption in supply of this device is expected to impact patient care and as such may require adjustments to the clinical management of patients receiving acute or chronic hemodialysis. The FDA expects the duration of this shortage to extend through early fall of 2025. The FDA recommends health care providers consider strategies to conserve the use of hemodialysis bloodlines when possible.

On January 8, 2025, B. Braun issued a customer letterExternal Link Disclaimer detailing an interruption in the production and supply of certain hemodialysis bloodlines as well as available market alternatives for these products.

Recommendations

The FDA recommends health care providers experiencing interruptions or shortages in supply of hemodialysis bloodlines develop strategies to conserve their use. Providers should use their clinical judgment when developing and implementing conservation strategies.

In developing strategies to preserve the supply for patients at highest risk, please consider the following:

Voluntarily report any concerns with supply chain and/or shortages of hemodialysis bloodlines to the FDA at deviceshortages@fda.hhs.gov.

The FDA will keep health care providers and the public informed as new or additional information becomes available.

Background

The FDA is updating the Medical Device Shortages List to include hemodialysis bloodlines (product code FJK). Section 506J of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) requires the FDA to maintain a publicly available, up-to-date list of the devices the FDA has determined to be in shortage.

FDA Actions

The FDA is:

  • Working with manufacturers and dialysis providers to monitor the current situation in order to help ensure hemodialysis bloodlines remain available for patients when medically necessary.
  • Evaluating potential solutions for mitigating patient impact.
  • Informing the public as new information becomes available.

The FDA reviews each notification received under section 506J of the FD&C Act and uses this information, along with any additional details about the supply of and demand for a device, to determine whether the device is in shortage.
